 "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes was the first Top 40 hit by an openly lesbian group. The Indigo Girls never got higher than Number 52.

April 10, 1971: John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads" hit the Billboard Hot 100. It was his first appearance on the charts.
John Denver wrote "Take Me Home Country Roads" with his friends Bill and Taffy Danoff. After performing with the Danoffs, they went back to the couple's home, where they played John what they had of this song.

May 22, 1976: "Silly Love Songs" by Paul McCartney & Wings hit Number 1 in America.

Paul McCartney was very sentimental when he shared the story behind “Silly Love Songs.” “Over the years people have said, ‘Aw, he sings love songs, he writes love songs, he’s so soppy at times.’ I thought, Well, I know what they mean, but, people have been doing love songs forever,” McCartney told Billboard in 2001.

Robert Nesta Marley was born in a small rural Jamaican village called Nine Miles. His father was a white man, Capt. Norval Marley, a superintendent of lands for the British government, which had colonized Jamaica in the 1660s.

November 20, 1947: Joe Walsh of the Eagles and the James Gang is born Joseph Fidler Walsh in Wichita, Kansas.

At the turn of the '70s, Joe Walsh led the James Gang through a trio of studio recordings highlighted by the ageless 'Funk #49," then embarked on a solo career also included the 1973 Top 40 hit 'Rocky Mountain Way.'  Walsh continued releasing solo projects after the Eagles' 1980 breakup.

Lennon once claimed that "Ticket to Ride" — the first track the Beatles recorded for the soundtrack to their second feature film, Help!, on February 15th, 1965 — was "one of the earliest heavy-metal records."
