June 1, 2006: The 1994 debut album by Oasis, Definitely Maybe, was voted the greatest album of all time in a survey to mark 50 years of the Official UK Albums Chart. The Beatles came in second and third place with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Revolver, OK Computer by Radiohead was fourth, and (What's the Story) Morning Glory by Oasis was voted fifth.

May 30, 1991: Metallica recorded "Nothing Else Matters" for their self-titled album.
Metallica band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, and Kirk Hammett wrote "Nothing Else Matters." Hetfield cited the band's constant touring as an inspiration for this song.

May 29, 1992: Sister Act was released.
Whoopi Goldberg stars in Sister Act as Deloris Wilson, a lounge singer forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program. The Reverend Mother orders Deloris to join the struggling choir.

May 28, 1982: "Rocky III" hit theaters, featuring a new theme song written around a critical line of dialogue in the film: "Eye of the Tiger." Sylvester Stallone asked the upstart Chicago band Survivor to write and record the song when he couldn't get permission to use the Queen song "Another One Bites The Dust."

May 26, 1994: Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley. 
The King of Pop and the daughter of Elvis Presley briefly met in the 1970s at a concert in Las Vegas but did not get to know each other until nearly two decades later. In the summer of 1993, the “Thriller” singer was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy named Jordan Chandler, which he vehemently denied. He turned to Lisa Marie for support amid the investigation and proposed to her over the phone later that year.

Music History Today: May 25, 2023

May 25, 1969: The movie "Midnight Cowboy" based on the 1965 novel of the same name was released.
"Midnight Cowboy" is the only film rated X or NC-17 to win an Oscar for Best Picture. A gritty, bleak look at the underbelly of urban American life, Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight's performances make it difficult to turn away.

Music History Today: May 24, 2023

May 24, 1975: Supertramp first Billboard Hot 100 single, "Bloody Well Right," peaked at Number 35 after ten weeks on the chart. It failed to chart in the UK.

One theory on Supertramp's "Bloody Well Right" performance in their homeland is that Brits were still offended by the adjective "bloody" in 1975. These days it is considered a mild expletive at best worldwide. The track answers the previous song on the album, "School."

May 21, 2019: Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Quentin Tarantino stated the soundtrack for American Graffiti influenced his music choices in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He "went nuts. It had Wolfman Jack DJ stuff filtered through. That was probably my first soundtrack album."

Chris Cornell was born in Seattle, which put him in the perfect position for the grunge music scene that sprung up there in the '80s. Cornell formed Soundgarden with guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1984.

May 15, 1980: The British mockumentary The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle about the Sex Pistols was released.
The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle centers around the Sex Pistols and their manager Malcolm McLaren. The movie's title was inspired by an article written by Skiffle musician Lonnie Donegan in the 1950s titled "Rock and Roll - It's a Swindle."

May 12, 1973: Led Zeppelin started a three-week run at Number 1 on the US album chart with their fifth album, Houses Of The Holy.

Houses Of The Holy follows the same basic pattern as Led Zeppelin IV, but the approach is looser and more relaxed. Jimmy Page's riffs rely on ringing, folky hooks as much as they do on thundering blues-rock, giving the album a lighter, more open atmosphere.

May 9, 2001: Moulin Rouge! was released at the Cannes Film Festival.
The soundtrack for the 2001 film adaptation of  Moulin Rouge! includes "Lady Marmalade," made famous in the 1970s by the girl group Labelle. The song contains the sexually suggestive lyric "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?" which translates to "Do you want to sleep with me tonight?"
