Music History Today: May 28, 2023

May 28, 1982: "Rocky III" hit theaters, featuring a new theme song written around a critical line of dialogue in the film: "Eye of the Tiger." Sylvester Stallone asked the upstart Chicago band Survivor to write and record the song when he couldn't get permission to use the Queen song "Another One Bites The Dust."

May 28, 1944: Gladys Knight, known as the "Empress of Soul," was born in Atlanta, Georgia.
Gladys Knight began singing with her siblings at age 8, calling themselves "the Pips." The group opened for R&B legends in the 1950s, headed to Motown, and crossed to pop music.

As Gladys Knight and the Pips, they recorded their signature song, "Midnight Train to Georgia." Knight left the Pips behind in 1989 and continued to perform and record as a solo artist.

May 28, 1966: The Mindbenders peaked at Number 2 in the US with "A Groovy Kind of Love." 
"A Groovy Kind of Love" was written by New York songwriters Carole Bayer Sager and Toni Wine; Sager was 22 when they wrote it, and Wine was 17. Sager was still teaching high school when she wrote this, and Wine was still in high school. Both went on to very successful careers in the music industry, with Sager writing popular songs for stage productions and movies (including "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)") and Wine writing the hit "Candida" and singing on many famous songs, including Willie Nelson's version of "Always On My Mind" and "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies.

May 28, 1983: The four-day US Festival '83' took place in California, featuring The Clash, U2, David Bowie, The Pretenders, Van Halen, Stray Cats, Men At Work, Judas Priest, Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson. INXS, Joe Walsh, Motley Crue and Ozzy Osbourne. Over 750,000 fans attended the festival.

May 28, 2011: Lady Gaga entered the US music chart at Number 3 with "The Edge of Glory."
Lady Gaga wrote "The Edcge of Glory" about her grandfather while he was dying. Recalling the loss in 2010 during a Google Goes Gaga interview, the singer revealed that she wrote this song at an emotional moment at the piano with her father. "My dad and I were going to say goodbye to him at the hospice, and I got out a big thing of agave tequila, and my dad sat next to me at the piano, and we started doing shots back and forth, and I wrote 'The Edge of Glory' on the piano and my dad and I cried."
