June 28, 1986: Madonna entered Billboard's Hot 100 at Number 42 with her single "Papa Don't Preach."

The song "Papa Don't Preach," about teenage pregnancy, was one of her most controversial. The line "I've made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby" caused anti-abortion groups to praise Madonna and abortion-rights groups to criticize her. Her previous hits, like "Holiday," "Borderline," and "Lucky Star," stayed well clear of controversy.

June 28, 1956: The film version of The King and I, based on the 1951 same-named Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, was released. It was nominated for 9 Oscars, winning 5, including Best Actor for Yul Brynner.

June 28, 1968: Aretha Franklin was on the cover of Time magazine.

June 28, 1985: Dire Straits released "Money for Nothing" from the album Brothers in Arms.

Mark Knopfler wrote "Money for Nothing" after overhearing delivery men in a New York department store complain about their jobs while watching MTV. The innovative video was one of the first to feature computer-generated animation. The characters were supposed to have more detail, like buttons on their shirts, but they used up the budget and had to leave it as is. It won Best Video at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards.
