Music History Today: June 27, 2023

June 27, 1987: Whitney Houston became the first woman in US history to enter the album chart at Number 1 with her self-titled debut, Whitney. She also became the first woman to top the singles chart with four consecutive releases when "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" hit Number 1.

June 27, 1968: Elvis Presley appeared at NBC studios for a Singer Presents … Elvis program. The show was aired on NBC in December of that year.

June 27, 1989: The B-52s released Cosmic Thing.

Cosmic Thing contains the singles "Love Shack" and "Roam," which reached the Top 10 and 20 of the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, respectively.

The music video for "Love Shack" won the award for Best Group Video at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards. Cosmic Thing was the 9th best-selling album of 1990 in the US, peaking at Number 4 on the Billboard 200.
