Music History Today: July 18, 2022

July 18, 1987: "Dirty Dancing: Original Soundtrack" was released. The Blow Monkeys caught a huge break when their cover of Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" was included on the multi-platinum album.

July 18, 1964: "The Girl from Ipanema" by Stan Getz, with Astrud Gilberto providing vocals, peaked at Number 5 on Billboard's Hot 100. Comedian Bob Rivers cut a parody track titled "The Girl With Emphysema." 

July 18, 1970: "Hand Me Down World" by The Guess Who entered the US Top 100.

"Hand Me Down World" is featured on the Guess Who's 1970 album, Share the Land. It was the first LP the group recorded after Randy Bachman left to form Bachman-Turner Overdrive. This song's writer, Kurt Winter, was added to the band.

July 18, 1987: A cover of Sam Cooke's "Twistin" the Night Away" by Rod Stewart debuted on Billboard's Hot 100.

July 18, 2009: Green Day rocketed into the US Top 40, from Number 55 to 37,  with "21 Guns." It peaked at Number 22.
