November 1, 1960:  Elvis Presley released the single "Are You Lonesome Tonight."

The young Elvis, the vengeful sex-demon who took the country by storm in the mid-’50s, was the best Elvis, the one who changed the world and completely rewrote the rule-book of American popular song.

But that version of Elvis could’ve never recorded “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and made it work. The Elvis of 1960  was the one who needed to make “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” He’s the one who found a way to exploit every drop of juice that the song ever had.

November 1, 1963: The Beatles first appeared as a tour headliner at a show in Gloucestershire, England. On the setlist: "I Saw Her Standing There," "From Me To You," and "All My Loving."

The Beatles’ fourth British tour of 1963 opened on this evening with a performance at the Odeon Cinema in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

 

This was the group’s first series of concerts as unchallenged headliners. The Beatles topped a bill featuring five other acts: The Rhythm & Blues Quartet, The Vernons Girls, The Brook Brothers, Peter Jay & The Jaywalkers, and The Kestrels.

November 1, 1971: Olivia Newton-John released her first solo album, If Not For You.

Olivia Newton-John's If Not for You covers Gordon Lightfoot, the Band, Leslie Duncan, David Gates, Kris Kristofferson, Tom Rush, and others. Though "If" is a pedestrian cover of Bread's song which hit this same year, it would be a mistake to think these are all mere "covers."

November 1, 1987: Dire Straits' CD "Brothers In Arms" passed the three million sales mark, becoming the UK's all-time best-selling album.

No one, not even Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits themselves, could have anticipated what happened when they released their new album in 1985. 
It went on to top the US chart for nine weeks, became a global No. 1, a double Grammy-winner and has sold an estimated 30 million copies worldwide. After the preview of the single ‘So Far Away,’ 25 May was the date that year that Brothers In Arms made its debut on the UK listings.

November 1, 1997:  Aqua moved to Number 1 in the UK with "Barbie Girl."

One of the most popular pop songs of the 90’s, Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua released “Barbie Girl” as their third single from their debut album studio “Aquarium “(1997). 
Aqua
Written by all members of the band, it was based on an exhibit that Søren Rasted went to see on kitsch culture in Denmark, which featured the infamous Barbie dolls created by American toy company Mattel. It was voted NME’s award for Worst Single in 1998.
