August 9, 2011: Adele released "Someone Like You," from her album 21, in the US. 

"Someone like You" is about a boyfriend who broke up with Adele. She wrote it with American songwriter and producer Dan Wilson.

It was one of the last songs written for 21. The track, which epitomizes the lyrical content of 21, summarizes the now defunct relationship that the record is all about.

August 9, 1980: Paul Simon's "Late In the Evening" entered, more than halfway up Billboard's Hot 100, at Number 46.

Simon composed "Late In the Evening" for One-Trick Pony, a semi-autobiographical movie he wrote and starred in. The song plays at the beginning and end of the film. It describes a dream sequence that Paul Simon had when he was a teenager.

It's late at night (evening) and he's hearing the radio as he falls asleep and the next then he knows he's dreaming about walking down the street and then playing lead guitar in a band. Smoking a "J" obviously refers to a joint.

August 9, 1975: "SOS" by Abba debuted on the US music chart. 

"SOS" was written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson. The title itself was coined by Stig, though the lyrics he provided were re-written by Ulvaeus. "SOS" was among the first of three songs recorded for the group's 1975 album, ABBA.

August 9, 1986: Queen ended their Magic European tour at Knebworth Park, Stevenage, England, with over 120,000 fans witnessing what would be Queen's last ever live performance.

August 9, 1995: Jerry Garcia guitarist and singer from the Grateful Dead died from a heart attack at the Serenity Knolls rehabilitation clinic in San Francisco aged 53.
