July 21, 1984: "Cruel Summer" by Bananarama entered Billboard's Hot 100. 
"Cruel Summer" by Bananarama was released in 1983. Initially a stand-alone single, it was subsequently included on their self-titled second album a year later.

The song reached number eight on the UK Singles Chart in 1983, and after its inclusion in the 1984 film The Karate Kid, it reached number nine on the US Billboard Hot.

July 21, 1962: Claudine Clark made a big move into the US Top 40, from 60 to 32, with "Party Lights."
"Party Lights" by Claudine Clark reached #3 on the U.S. R&B chart and #5 on the U.S. pop chart in 1962. The song ranked #35 on Billboard magazine's Top 100 singles of 1962.

July 21, 1973: Marvin Gaye had the fastest mover up the US music chart, from Number 74 to 50, with "Let's Get it On."
Written by 1950s one-hit-wonder Ed Townsend ("For Your Love" in 1958), "Let's Get it On" originally addressed the author's desire to get on with life after beating alcoholism. Marvin Gaye completely changed the lyrics (and meaning) to the song after meeting Janis Hunter, the woman who would become his second wife.

July 21, 1990: Jon Bon Jovi's "Blaze Of Glory" entered the US chart at Number 58 on its way to the top of the chart. 
"Blaze of Glory" is the debut solo single by Jon Bon Jovi which reached Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Mainstream rock chart in 1990.

Allegedly, Emilio Estevez requested Bon Jovi's song "Wanted Dead or Alive" for the soundtrack to Young Guns II, but Bon Jovi did not think the lyrics fit the theme of the Western movie. However, the request inspired him to write "Blaze of Glory" with lyrics more topical to the film.

July 21, 2001: Smash Mouth's cover of "I'm a Believer," featured in the movie Shrek, entered Billboard's Hot 100.
