Styx & Jim Dandy Sing: In Concert

The first concert I attended was Aerosmith - on their Rocks tour -  at the Carolina Coliseum on December 19. 1976. REO Speedwagon opened for them. One week later (December 26, 1976) I saw Styx - on their Crystal Ball tour - at the Jacksonville Coliseum. The opening act was Black Oak Arkansas (tour list here).

I went to the concert in South Carolina with a friend from school. My cousins in Fernandina Beach, Florida, went with me to the Styx concert.

Styx

In 1976, Styx had two hit songs I remember; "Lady" and "Lorelei." I liked both tunes...but not enough to buy their album. (Note: I never owned anything by Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon, Styx nor Black Oak Arkansas.) By 1983, when Styx did "Mr. Roboto," I was so over them. I hated that song; still do.

Black Oak Arkansas

Jim Dandy Mangrum was the prototype for David Lee Roth, lead singer of Van Halen. He strutted around onstage in skin-tight pants. In the same way David Bowie's album cover for David Live influenced my style in 1974 , Jim Dandy's crotch-hugging trousers informed the waist size I wore. The legs of all my pants were still baggy, but the inseam was super tight.

Hey! It was the times.
